Shannon Butler
Statement
Shannon Butler is a Ceramicist who has been working as an artist since her art school graduation in 2006. From 2008-2016 she ran a brick and mortar store named “kilnhouse studio”, in which she made and sold pottery for a living. After her children were born she continued to make, and sell on Instagram under the same name. Shannon focuses on hand building with porcelain and she uses many different techniques to create an optimistic bricolage of surface decoration on each piece. One technique she employs is a way of carving named quenca seca; in which she carves designs into plaster tablets then allowing her to create a tactile and illustrated surface on the clay. Every piece is one of a kind and tells a story, which is influenced by the reverie she has for her rural farm upbringing and love of the Art Nouveau Movement along with nuances of life. She finishes her romantic and joyous work by juxtaposing layers of stain and glaze; adding to the vintage aesthetic. As a romantic, she finds ways to create a unique and celebratory expression in each and every porcelaneous stoneware piece whether it be a mug or a sculpture.
